07/01/10 Feline’s Pride Issues Nationwide Recall of its Natural Chicken Formula Cat Food Due to Salmonella Contamination

Contact: Shelby Gomas, Tel: 1-716-580-3096

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 1, 2010 - Buffalo, NY – Feline’s Pride is announcing a voluntary recall of Feline’s Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.) produced on 6/10/10, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. People handling raw pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.

When consumed by humans, Salmonella can cause an infection, salmonellosis. The symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, minimal diarrhea, fever, and headache. Certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to acquiring salmonellosis from such pet food products and may experience more severe symptoms.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product is packaged in uncoded plastic containers and sold frozen to private consumers nationwide. Once thawed, the pet food has a shelf life of about 1 week. The firm manufactures the pet food by an as-ordered basis. This recall affects only those orders placed and shipped from June 10 through June 17, 2010

The firm and FDA are investigating this matter to determine the source of this problem, and will take any additional steps necessary to protect the public health.

To date, both the firm and the FDA have received no reports of Salmonella infection relating to this product.

This product should not be fed to pets but should instead be disposed of in a safe manner (e.g., in a securely covered trash receptacle). People who are experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection after having handled the pet food product should seek medical attention, and report their use of the product and illness to the nearest FDA office.

People should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the pet food – especially those made from raw animal protein such as meat or fish -- to help prevent infection. People may risk bacterial infection not only by handling pet foods, but by contact with pets or surfaces exposed to these foods, so it is important that they thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap.

Since certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly at risk from exposure they should avoid handling this product.

Consumers with questions should contact the company at (716) 580-3096, Monday –Friday from 10 am - 4 pm EDT.

06/18/10 Natural Balance announces precautionary voluntary Recall on specific lots of Dry Sweet Potato and Chicken Dog Food

Natural Balance today published the following letter from its President:

June 18, 2010

Dear Natural Balance Family,

My name is Joey Herrick, and I’m the President of Natural Balance Pet Foods. My wife and I started the company 22 years ago and began by delivering to stores and rescues out of our family car. Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to have Natural Balance become a highly respected company, known for great products and working with the best pet food distributors and stores in the business. That’s why it pains me to have to talk about a recall.

Our 5 lb. and 28 lb. Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog food, manufactured on December 17, 2009 with a “Best By” date of June 17, 2011 is being voluntarily recalled. A random sampling of this product tested positive for Salmonella by the FDA. In my mind, I asked, “How can this happen? I spent over $900,000 putting in our laboratory to test our products before we release them.” We tested samples from the production run when it was manufactured six months ago, and the results came back negative.

Upon hearing from the FDA, I immediately went to our Director of Customer Service, a licensed Registered Veterinary Technician, to check call logs for any complaints with this product. Our Customer Service department closely tracks and monitors complaints for any potential issues; and I heard no reports in our weekly meetings, so I was not surprised when I found we did not have a single complaint about this product. Next, I immediately pulled the retention samples for this product to be sent to an independent third party laboratory. The samples were sent to Zoologix, a laboratory that does real-time PCR testing, the most sensitive type of testing for Salmonella. Those test results also came back negative (CLICK HERE to see results). I reported our test results and call logs to the FDA, but due to the positive result they had found, they recommended a recall.

I am sure your dogs are like my dogs — they sleep on our beds, they watch TV with us and if they are lucky enough, they come to work with us. This is why we are following the FDA’s recommendation and issuing a voluntary recall. Since we have not had any complaints on this product and it was manufactured six months ago, I expect that most of it has already been consumed. If there are any bags in your cupboards, please take them back to the store you shop at for a full refund.

Not all states are affected. The following is a list of those states that are included in the voluntary recall: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

I believe that we are the only pet food company that has built an in-house lab as an added check and gives you the test results in real time on our website. We hold the finished product in our warehouses for two to three days, until that testing is completed. We only release product to be shipped when the testing is negative.

No testing protocol is perfect, but the alternative is not testing at all. That wouldn’t work for me. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing we aren’t testing every product before it goes out, to help make sure our products are the best in the business. Any testing is much safer for you and your pets than the alternative, which is not testing at all.

Our goal is to have the best and safest pet food on the market. I don’t believe there is a better or safer product than Natural Balance Pet Food. Yes, we had an isolated incident, but we are continually testing our products and making the results available to you. I am proud of our laboratory and will be adding more layers of testing as a result of this recall. We have added over a half dozen significant improvements over the last three years, and remain committed to the safety of our products, and the pets that enjoy them. Our commitment is the same today as it was 22 years ago, to make the best pet food in the business.

CLICK HERE for details on product potentially affected. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (800) 829-4493, or info@naturalbalanceinc.com.

Yours Truly,

President
Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc

Having incorporated this state-of-the-art technology on our Freeze Dried Raw products in late 2009, we were able to confidently implement the process universally on all Raw Frozen Diets after the February 11, 2010 recall in order to further enhance food safety. Nature’s Variety also utilizes a test and hold protocol to ensure that all High Pressure Pasteurized Raw Frozen Diets test negative for harmful bacteria before being released for sale.

"Nature’s Variety believes replacing all raw frozen chicken products on the market with new raw frozen chicken products that use High Pressure Pasteurization is an important and responsible step in order to reinforce consumer confidence and trust," stated Reed Howlett, CEO of Nature’s Variety. "By recalling all raw frozen chicken products with 'Best If Used By' dates on or before 2/5/11, we can provide our pet parents with new raw frozen chicken products that have been processed through High Pressure Pasteurization. Adopting High Pressure Pasteurization is an important step to ensure that our products meet the strictest quality and food safety standards."

Reed offers this promise to you, "Our commitment to consumers in the future is the same as it’s been in the past – to offer Raw Frozen Diets made from the highest quality ingredients, made in our own plant in the Midwest, by people who care deeply about pet nutrition, health, and happiness."

4/09: Wysong voluntarily recalls specific lots of it's dry food formulas Maintenance & Senior for dogs due to mold
Following is a copy of the announcement:

MOLD IN PAST WYSONG PET FOODS

-Notice, Explanation, and Response-

Mold has been found in some bags of Wysong dry extruded foods manufactured in June and July of 2009. To be safe, no suspect products from these batches should be sold or fed. The affected products are:

Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090617
Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090624
Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090706
Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090720
Wysong Senior™: lot #: 090623

Mold spores are in all natural foods. When there is heat, oxygen, and sufficient moisture the spores can bloom into mold. Everyone has experienced this with foods at home.

From what can be determined, the problem with the Wysong foods stems from unusually high heat and humidity on those summer dates. This combined with a malfunctioning moisture checking device is believed to be the cause of the higher moisture.

Sometimes the enrobed dust-on ingredients used on Wysong foods are confused with mold. If there is a question, discontinue feeding and contact Wysong for a determination.

As noted in the article below, mold is a ubiquitous problem in all packaged foods. Wysong takes many measures to address this:

1. Incoming ingredients are tested for moisture and mycotoxins.
2. Finished products are also tested.
3. Ingredients are used to inhibit mold growth.
4. The NutriPak oxygen and light barrier packaging inhibits aerobic mold growth.
5. Products are nitrogen flushed to remove oxygen.
6. Products are fresh batched.
7. Ingredients are used to help adsorb toxins should they be present.
8. People are advised to refrigerate or freeze unused product, i.e. treat it like any fresh natural food is treated.
9. Most importantly, Dr. Wysong has advised for the past 30 years against feeding any singular food meal after meal. Diets should be rotated and fresh foods incorporated into meal planning in order to decrease the risk of chronic exposure to toxins that may be present in any one food. This information is on all Wysong packaged pet foods.

Notice of the problem:

1. Immediately alerted all distributors and retailers.
2. Posting to website
3. Report to FDA and attempted contact with USDA/APHIS
4. Replies to all customer inquiries

Concerns, questions, allegations:

We ask that you please consider the following before giving credence to allegations and committing to an opinion. Also consider that Wysong has led the pet food industry in almost every natural and healthy food innovation for the past thirty years. This has resulted in wonderful health to tens of thousands of pets through multiple generations.

As will be seen below, the primary complaint seems to be about the speed with which we gave notice. At first report of potential mold in our products, Wysong launched an internal investigation. Batch records were re-examined, numerous bags of product opened and scrutinized, product samples were acquired from customers, and testing in-house and out-of-house conducted

Once Wysong ascertained that there was mold presence and the potential for mold (based on moisture tests) in certain batches we alerted our distributors, who were the primary recipients of these batches of product. Distributors were instructed to dispose of the product, as well as pull product from stores that had already received the product. Product from these problematic batches that remained in-house was disposed of.

Additionally, Wysong immediately contacted stores that received recalled product from us directly, and asked them to remove the products from store shelves.

Much of the criticism regarding the recall has centered on us purportedly not publicizing the recall enough, or that we are attempting to downplay or hide the recall. What is missed here is that we keep thorough records pertaining to who receives what products. Accordingly, when we determined a recall was necessary we put our focus into alerting those that actually received the products, and not those that had no reasonable chance of acquiring the affected products. Also, consider that Wysong is a small family business, not on the scale of most pet food companies that sell products far and wide with no knowledge of who purchases. Such companies would need to do a more generally publicized recall.

10/01/2009: Diamond Pet Foods announces on the Premium Edge Pet Food Brands website voluntary recall of select cat food products
Note: No recall, Voluntary Product Withdrawal issued by manufacturer
Following is a copy of the actual announcement:

ANNOUNCEMENT

Diamond Pet Foods has withdrawn from distribution the following date codes of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball cat: RAF0501A22X 18lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6lb. The calls from pet owners or veterinarians regarding this issue have been centered in the Rochester, NY area. All retail outlets shipped the above lots were contacted, asking them to pull the product from the store shelves. The retailers were also asked to contact their customers via email or telephone requesting them to check the date code of the food. However, if you or anyone you know has these date codes of Premium Edge cat food, please return them to your retailer.

Symptoms displayed by an affected cat will be neurological in nature. Any cats fed these date codes that display these symptoms should be immediately taken to a veterinarian.

Product testing proved no contaminants were discovered in the cat food; however the cat foods were deficient in thiamine. Diamond tracked the vitamin premix lot number that was utilized in these particular cat foods and have performed testing on another lot of Premium Edge cat food that used the same vitamin premix, and it was not deficient in thiamine. No other neurological signs have been reported on any other product manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods.

09/30/2009: Nutro Pet Food announces on its website voluntary puppy food withdrawal sold in select pet supply super markets in select States
Note: No recall, Voluntary Product Withdrawal issued by manufacturer
Following is a copy of the release:

For Immediate Release:

Nutro Products Voluntary Retrieval of Select Puppy Foods

Q:  I heard that there may be plastic in some NUTRO® products.  Is this true?
A:  Small pieces of melted plastic were recently found in the production line of select varieties of NUTRO®  dry dog and cat food products.  We immediately retrieved the affected pet food from our distributors, and only three sku's reached retail stores.  These were delivered to a small number of PetSmart and Petco stores.  The specific products are listed below.

Upon discovery of the melted plastic, we immediately halted manufacturing and performed a thorough search of all equipment.  We identified the source as a worker's “bump cap,” similar to a hard hat, which inadvertently made its way into our manufacturing process.

Based on our extensive review, it is highly unlikely that any pieces of plastic made it into finished product.   However, upon learning of the incident, we voluntarily retrieved all potentially affected products.

We strive to produce pet food of the highest quality and safety standards. Consumers who believe they have purchased potentially affected product should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® product, or contact the Nutro Products Consumer Care team at 1-800-833-5330.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and support for Nutro® Products.

05/21/09: Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

Contact:
Monica Barrett
Nutro Products, Inc.
(615) 628-5387
monica.barrett@effem.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries.  This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected.  One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium.  Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier.  An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel.  We are working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed further.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile.  While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea.  If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product.  Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

02/23/09: FDA informs of American Health Kennels announcing voluntary recall of baked dog treats containing peanut butter

Contact: 4351 NE 11th Avenue Pompano Beach, Florida 33064 1-954-781-0730 or barkbars@aol.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Pompano Beach, Florida -- February 13, 2009 -- As a result of the expanded recall by the Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) Blakely, Georgia facility, American Health Kennels, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for certain baked dog treats containing peanut butter supplied by PCA. The Blakely PCA facility is the subject of an ongoing U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation into potential Salmonella contamination of peanut butter. American Health Kennels, Inc does not know that any of the peanut butter from PCA that was used in our process was infected with salmonella. The parameters in our formulation and baking process (280F) are well in excess of the CDC’s guidelines (190F) for an effective salmonella bacteria kill; further American Health Kennels Inc. has had no reports of illness associated with our products.

We are effecting this recall in the interest of public safety even though we know our product is safe.

According to the FDA, pets with salmonellosis may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may exhibit milder systems such as decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain while other pets may show no symptoms at all. Well animals can be carriers and transmit the bacteria to other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and exhibits these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

While the risk of animals contracting salmonellosis is minimal, there is risk to humans from handling these products. It is important for people to wash their hands--and make sure children wash their hands--before and, especially, after feeding treats to pets.

Update on FDA's Investigation
January 19, 2009: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a very active and dynamic investigation into the source of the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak.  At this time, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state partners have traced sources of Salmonella Typhimurium contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), which manufactures peanut butter and peanut paste—a concentrated product consisting of ground, roasted peanuts—that are both distributed to food manufacturers to be used as an ingredient in many commercially produced products including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream. In addition, PCA peanut butter is distributed to and institutionally served in such settings as long-term care facilities and cafeterias.
The FDA has notified PCA that product samples originating from its Blakely, Georgia (Ga.), processing plant have been tested and found positive for Salmonella by laboratories in the states of Minnesota and ConnecticutConnecticut and Minnesota have reported to FDA that samples of King Nut peanut butter tested in those states are a genetic match to the strain of Salmonella associated with the nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium.  The results from the Connecticut Department of Health Laboratory are from an unopened container of King Nut peanut butter.  FDA wishes to acknowledge the Connecticut laboratory, Infectious Disease Section and Department of Consumer Protection as well as health officials in Minnesota for their efforts.
King Nut is a distributor of PCA product. This information, along with the results available from laboratory testing and the CDC epidemiological analysis, have now led FDA to confirm that the source of this outbreak is peanut butter and peanut paste produced by PCA at its Blakely, Ga. processing plant.
On January 18, PCA expanded its previous voluntary recall to include more products and lot numbers relating to peanut butter and peanut paste products manufactured  on or after July 1, 2008, at its Blakely, Ga., plant because of potential Salmonella contamination. The peanut butter products being recalled are sold by PCA in bulk containers ranging in size from five (5) to 1700 pounds.  The peanut paste is sold in sizes ranging from 35-pound containers to product sold by the tanker container.  These products are not sold directly to consumers.  PCA has stopped all production at its Blakely, Ga. plant as the FDA continues its investigation. Based on this information, and on the current state of the investigation, the FDA recommends that consumers avoid eating products that have been recalled and discard them.
Major national brands of jarred peanut butter are not affected by the PCA recall.  PCA does not sell peanut butter directly to consumers.  PCA only sells peanut butter to institutions and food manufacturers (some of which use it as an ingredient in other processed/packaged foods). Some food manufacturers use PCA peanut butter or peanut paste in baked or processed foods, such as crackers, cookies, cakes or ice cream to name a few. The FDA and food manufacturers are working to identify products that may be affected, and to track the ingredient supply chain of those products to facilitate their removal from the marketplace.
Based on available information, FDA and CDC recommendations include:
For Consumers
FDA has created a searchable list of products and brands associated with the expanded PCA recall. This list is available on the FDA website at:
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm and will be updated on a regular basis as additional sub recalls occur and information is received by FDA from the industry.
Because identification of products subject to recall is continuing, the FDA urges consumers to first visit FDA’s website to determine if commercially-prepared or manufactured peanut butter/peanut paste-containing products (such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream) are subject to recall. If consumers do not find the product of interest on FDA’s website they may wish to call the toll-free number listed on most food packaging or visit the company’s website.
If consumers cannot determine if their peanut butter, peanut butter/peanut paste-containing products or institutionally-served peanut butter may contain PCA peanut butter/peanut paste, we recommend that they do not consume those products. Efforts to specifically identify products subject to the PCA recall and to continuously update consumers are ongoing.
Do not eat products that have been recalled and throw them away in a manner that prevents others from eating them.
Persons who think they may have become ill from eating peanut butter are advised to consult their health care providers.
For Retailers
Stop selling recalled products.
For Directors of Institutions and Food Service Establishments
Ensure that they are not serving recalled products.
For Manufacturers
Inform consumers about whether their products could contain peanut butter or peanut paste from Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).  If a manufacturer knows their products do not contain peanut butter or peanut paste from PCA, they should inform consumers of that. For specific guidance: Guidance for Industry: Product Recalls, Including Removals and Corrections
The FDA will closely monitor these events by continuing to work with the firms on the details of their actions, conducting follow-up audits and inspections, monitoring the progress of the firms’ actions, working with state and local regulatory authorities, and notifying our foreign regulatory counterparts of products that have now been confirmed as having been distributed internationally.

ORIJEN CAT FOOD AUSTRALIA: Champion Petfoods announced a VOLUNTARY RECALL of ORIJEN brand cat food sold in Australia.

The recall is restricted to AUSTRALIA ONLY and was issued in response to reports from the Australian veterinary community of 27 cats showing neurological symptoms after consuming ORIJEN.

While there is no definitive link between ORIJEN CAT food and illness in the Australian cats, we have recalled our product from Australia as a precautionary measure.

The following ‘Questions and Answers’ are intended to explain: WHY THE PROBLEM IS EXCLUSIVE TO AUSTRALIA THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM PREVENTATIVE MEASURES AND AVAILABLE TREATMENT OPTIONS

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q:  DOES THE RECALL EXTEND BEYOND AUSTRALIA?

A:  No, The recall is for AUSTRALIA ONLY

Q:  HOW DO YOU KNOW THE PROBLEM IS LIMITED TO AUSTRALIA? A: WHILE ORIJEN SALES IN AUSTRALIA ACCOUNT FOR LESS THAN ¼ OF 1 PERCENT OF TOTAL SALES, AUSTRALIA  ACCOUNTS FOR 100% OF CASES. ORIJEN was sold in Australia only for a 9 month period of February through October 2008.  During this time ONLY 6 PALLETS of ORIJEN CAT food actually entered retail distribution in Australia. This equates to 200 Australian cats fed daily over the 9 month period.  Of these 200 cats, 27 are reported having the syndrome of which 4 have been unfortunately euthanized and 4 that are thankfully recovering.  During the same nine month period, shipments of ORIJEN CAT food equivalent to feed 85,000 cats were made to 49 other countries. ZERO cases were reported outside of Australia

Q:  WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT AUSTRALIA?

A:  IRRADIATION Champion Petfoods has investigated factors that make Australia unique from our other ORIJEN markets, both export and domestic. Of the 50 countries to which we supply ORIJEN, Australia is the only country that requires the IRRADIATION TREATMENT of ORIJEN cat foods.

Q:  WHAT IS IRRADIATION?

A:  Irradiation is a process that passes Cobalt 60 gamma rays through food to reduce microbial hazards, specifically, in this case - imported pet foods containing fresh meats.

Q:  IS ALL DRY CAT FOOD IN AUSTRALIA IRRADIATED?

A:  NO. The overwhelming majority of dry cat foods in Australia do not require irradiation. ORIJEN is one of very few that must comply with this regulation.

Q:  WHY IS ORIJEN IRRADIATED? A:  Australia requires irradiation on foods that include fresh meats or that have been cooked at low temperatures.

Other pet foods that are cooked at high temperatures or are made with chicken meal, turkey meal, fish meal or other ingredients that are pre-cooked at high temperatures prior to inclusion in pet foods do not have to be irradiated.

Q:  ISN’T IRRADIATION GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS SAFE?

A:  YES.  But Irradiation is typically applied to human foods at doses between 5-10kGY. ORIJEN in Australia received a minimum level of 50 kGY and records recovered from the Australian irradiation facility show that ORIJEN was irradiated to levels reaching 61 kGY. THESE ARE VERY SUBSTANTIAL LEVELS OF IRRADIATION. Studies indicate that cats fed dry cat food irradiated at levels between 36 and 47kGY develop the same neurological symptoms as seen in the Australian cats.

Q:  HOW DOES IRRADIATION AFFECT ORIJEN? A:  In recent weeks, Champion Petfoods has conducted extensive testing on ORIJEN Cat sold in Australia. From a combination of laboratory test results, scientific papers from reputable journals, and consultation from various nutritional experts and veterinarians around the world, we have discovered 2 primary factors:

1) VITAMIN A DEPLETION IN IRRADIATED FOODS Our tests show that irradiation of ORIJEN Cat at 50kGY causes a depletion of vitamin A of up to 77%. The irradiation levels applied to ORIJEN in Australia exceeded this amount. We tested ORIJEN cat foods at varying levels of irradiation (0 kGY (control), 25kGY and 50kGY). The results show a direct and linear relationship between the increase in irradiation dosage and vitamin A depletion.  In other words, more vitamins were depleted as the level of irradiation increased.

Literature published by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (2007) shows that depletion of vitamin A from irradiated cat food is associated with the same symptoms in cats as are reported in Australia (CASSIDY ET. AL, 2007).

An excerpt from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists’ study supports this finding: “Both SPF (specific pathogen free) and conventional status cats had been fed to appetite on the same commercial formula ration (Gilbertson and Page Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, UK), except that the ration fed to the SPF cats had been irradiated by a single-exposure gamma-radiation treatment between 36.3 and 47.3 kGy (Cobalt 60 irradiator; Isotron Ireland, Tullamore, Ireland). The irradiated diet was consumed to the same extent as the non-irradiated diet, and affected animals did not lose weight until the developing ataxia hindered their access to food…  Following supplementation of the irradiated diet with pasteurized proprietary tinned cat food in the winter of 2001 and, ultimately, the replacement of the irradiated diet with an equivalent pasteurized diet, no further cases occurred”.

The report describes an investigation of 8 cases where the disease is associated with the long-term feeding of cats on a gamma-irradiated dry food diet.  This study is available on the internet from the link below:

2) THE FORMATION AND RELEASE OF FREE RADICALS IN IRRADIATED FOODS A second major impact of irradiation is the formation and release of free radicals.  Irradiation does not affect all foods equally. ORIJEN is a nutritionally dense food with much higher levels of long-chain fatty acids (DHA, EPA) than conventional pet foods.  These fatty acids are susceptible to oxidation following irradiation.  Bi-products from fatty acid oxidation, mainly free radicals, are released into the body with the potential to cause tissue damage.

Combined with the loss of antioxidant vitamins (see Vitamin A described above), free radicals are thought to be a major contributing factor.

When irradiation is applied to food, the molecular structure of long chain fatty acids (DHA, EPA) is altered.  This causes the formation of free radicals that are then released into the body.

ORIJEN CAT foods contain very high levels of EPA and DHA unsaturated fatty acids and therefore have a much greater potential for free radical formation (in response to irradiation) than do conventional dry cat foods.

Scientific evidence shows that increased oxidative bi-products combined with decreased presence of antioxidant vitamins (see above) are consistent with the symptoms shown in Australian cats.  The fact that cats in Australia treated with vitamin and antioxidant supplementation have shown improvements supports this finding.

An excerpt from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists’ study supports this position: “Irradiation is known to reduce the vitamin content of food, the effect of which may be indirect, in that inadequate amounts of these compounds may be available to counteract the effects of free radicals generated by normal cell metabolism. A previous study found that irradiation of a feline diet containing 9.8% fat with a 2- to 5-Mrad dose totally destroyed its vitamin A and β-carotene content, whereas thiamine, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and folic acid were depleted to a lesser extent, and vitamin E concentrations appeared to be unaffected by this dose of radiation. The relatively high dietary fat requirement of cats may be significant in this context in that irradiation of this fat component could potentially generate higher concentrations of micronutrient-damaging free radicals than would be generated on irradiating diets of lower fat content.”

Q:  WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I LIVE IN AUSTRALIA AND FEED ORIJEN CAT?

A:  Please return any unused portion of ORIJEN Cat food to the place of purchase for a full refund.  If you think that you see any symptoms of this syndrome in your cat please contact your veterinary immediately.  There is evidence that health can improve with vitamin and antioxidant supplementation.

SIGNS Changes in your cat’s way of walking – the gait may be wobbly, or your cat’s legs may slip under when going around a corner Unwilling to jump onto sofa or bed Loss of balance and falling off of bench-tops, tables etc

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Fresh food carnivorous diet consisting of fresh meat, occasional fish, occasional vegetables

Premium dry food if unable to feed the above

Anti-oxidants – Cysteine/Glutathione to protect liver and kidneys – for 6-8 weeks

Omega fatty acids ie. Fish Oil to act as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant

Vitamin A – oral form for 3 week period – weight of the animal and specific dose is important, please consult with your vet or with Champion Petfoods for specific dosages.

Regular exercise and play

Access to fresh spring water or reverse osmosis (RO) water

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Anti-oxidants, Omega fatty acid, Vitamins Prednisone, Metacam or Antibiotics if needed on veterinarian’s advice

Exercise, movement and physical therapy are crucial for recovery

Q:  ARE ORIJEN DOG FOODS IN AUSTRALIA ALSO IRRADIATED?

A:   YES. All ORIJEN diets sold in Australia and subjected to the same irradiation process.

Q:  ARE ORIJEN DOG FOODS SAFE?

A:  Champion Petfoods has examined the issue of safety in dogs very closely.

ORIJEN dog diets have been sold and consumed in Australia over the same 9 months that ORIJEN Cat has been sold, only in much greater quantities.

NO DOGS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. Dogs and cats are two different species with different nutritional needs and metabolic pathways. For example, cats require higher levels of vitamins than dogs (AAFCO 2008), and cats are highly sensitive to changes in vitamins or oxidative by-products (such as occur from irradiation). There are no reports or scientific studies linking irradiation to health problems in dogs.

Q:  WILL CHAMPION CONTINUE TO SELL ORIJEN PRODUCTS IN AUSTRALIA?

A:  NO.  Veterinarians in Australia have recently reported households where both dogs and cats are present and cases where cats prefer

ORIJEN dog food over the brand of cat food they receive. Of the 27 cases of illness, at least 2 cases involve cats eating ORIJEN dog food. As we are unable to control for cats consuming ORIJEN dog food, there is a small but measurable risk of cross-feeding in dual pet (dogs and cats) households. Implemented as a precautionary measure to prevent cross contamination, Champion Petfoods has elected to stop selling ORIJEN dog foods in Australia.

EVERY ORIJEN PRODUCT IS RIGOROUSLY TESTED BEFORE LEAVING OUR FACTORY. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ORIJEN CAT FOODS IN AUSTRALIA ALL ORIJEN PRODUCTS SHOULD BE USED IN CONFIDENCE.

Truth About Pet Foods.com reports of a conversation with an Orijen representative about the problems with cat food in Australia:

“The only reports of sick cats (or any pets) have been in Australia. All pet foods shipped into Australia must be irradiated – treated with radiation – before they are sold. Orijen has no control over this, this is a mandated issue from the government of Australia. Orijen has sent two samples of the irradiated food, along with non irradiated food from the same batch to two separate University testing laboratories. It is not sure if an answer for the illnesses will be found in these tests, however it should provide a wealth of information regarding effects of irradiation of foods. Orijen is expecting the test results on Wednesday, November 26, 2008. They will post the results on their website www.championpetfoods.com.
Orijen told me they feel the irradiation is the concern. Although this is frightening for already frightened pet owners, at this point I am in agreement that the irradiation is the concern.
Food is irradiated – treated with radiation – to kill bacteria and molds. In the process, much more is destroyed. Not only is the nutrition destroyed, but far more research than the FDA lets on to, tells us much more damage can occur. Irradiation breaks chemical bonds, and it is suspect that broken chemical bonds within foods containing numerous ingredients (a pet food) can alter the entire ‘food’ in many ways. “

LizzysHealthyPetFood.com reported about the issue on our Recall Alert on 11/24/08 (see below).

Not a recall but very important news flash about Orijen by Champion Pet Foods.
The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia reported under the head line “Cat deaths linked to pet food” on 11/24/08:

“Unexplained chronic illness and death among Sydney cats has been linked to a gourmet imported pet food withdrawn from stores over the past three weeks. A cat neurologist, Georgina Child, has put down five cats over the past week and treated or consulted with other vets about more than a dozen others suffering from paralysis. Dr Child, who is based at the University of Sydney's veterinary hospital and the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde, said the only factor that linked all the cats was a specialist pet food called Orijen, which is imported Cat eating out of blue bowlthrough a Canadian company, Champion Petfoods."There is a highly suspicious link because this is an uncommon expensive food in this country at the moment, and not sold in supermarkets," Dr Child said. "But all tests that have been done so far haven't given us an answer."First symptoms included wobbliness or weakness in the animal's hind legs, which could then progress to the front limbs. The condition did not appear to be infectious, Dr Child said, nor typical of a nutritional deficiency."Most worrying is that the cats showed no signs [of illness] while on the food," she said. "It seems to be happening weeks or even months later."The marketing manager of Champion Petfoods, Peter Muhlenfeld, confirmed yesterday the cat deaths had been traced back to Orijen's dry cat food, and the problem appeared to be restricted to Australia. He said samples sent back by the Australian distributor had a "strange odor". The company is investigating whether irradiation upon entry into Australia was the source of the contamination. The Oddy family of Dundas has lost two cats in the past week. "They were the children's pets; it's awful," Sarah Oddy said.”
Like we said, this is not a recall. We do however ask cat owners feeding the Orijen formulas to be cautious and stay tuned on this subject as we will bring you updates as soon as they become available.

Hartz Mountain Corporation in Secaucus, NJ announced on 10/20/08 that it is voluntarily recalling a specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips

The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ announced on 10/20/08 that it is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Mars Petcare US to stop production of food at facility involved in salmonella scares.
Posted: Friday, October 3, 2008, 1:27 p.m., EDT

Dry food in a bowlSince a nationwide voluntary recall was issued by
Mars Petcare US on Sept. 12 because of potential contamination with Salmonella Schwarzengrund in pet food products manufactured at its Everson, Pa., facility, the company decided to permanently close the plant.

The company halted production at the Everson facility July 29, when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced at the plant and two isolated cases of people infected with Salmonella Schwarzengrund. There have been no reported cases of deaths or illness since the recall was issued.

The recall affects 31 states and includes brands such as Pedigree, Country Acres, Members Mark, Retriever, Red Flannel, Special Kitty, Doggy Bag, Natural, Ol' Roy, Paws & Claws, Wegman's, Pet Pride, and PMI Nutrition. The Everson plant was also closed for a cleaning in 2007 after salmonella had been discovered in dog food products produced there.

The company urges consumers to look at the production lot codes under the UPC code to determine whether a product is affected. People can also go on the
Mars website and enter search by state and the product information by clicking a special tab at the top of the web page to find out if a product is affected.

Regarding measures Mars has taken following the voluntary recall, spokeswoman Debra Fair said that even though no direct link between product produced at the Everson facility and human or pet illness has been detected, the company took the precautionary action of issuing a recall to protect pets and their owners.

“Since we have not yet identified the source of the Salmonella Schwarzengrund at the Everson facility, we do not plan to resume production out of a commitment to the safety of our pet owners and their pets, customers and associates,” Fair said.

The Associated Press reported on 09/12/08 at around 11 P.M. EST:
“Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall Friday of all dry pet food products produced at its plant in Everson, Pa. between Feb. 18 and July 29, citing potential contamination with salmonella.

Mars, in a news release, did not say how much pet food is involved, but said the recall reaches 31 states and various brands and said the action was taken as a precaution. "Even though no direct link between products produced at the Everson plant and human or pet illness has been made, we are taking this precautionary action to protect pets and their owners," the company statement said. Mars said it stopped production at the plant July 29 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced in Everson and two isolated cases of people infected with salmonella. Mars said salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in humans also.

The company said consumers should look for "17" as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC for products affected. For Pedigree products, they should look for "PAE" on the bottom line. They can also call 1-877-568-4463 or consult http://www.petcare.mars.com/.

The brand names include some items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.”
